we said goodbye to a furry friend at work today. she languished in the shelter. adopted last year and returned 4 months later, and then she stayed with us for 7 months.
i know we made the right decision, but i feel like we’ve failed her. we, as people, failed this dog. her quality of life began to decline as she sat in the shelter month after month. we have some of the best trainers and behaviorists, but they aren’t magicians.
i often listen to people talk about how awful public shelters are because they have to euthanize animals practically everyday. but they aren’t the problem. like so many things, it’s a broken system, and the root of the problem lies in education and personal responsibility. if someone out there had spayed/neutered their dog, we wouldn’t have had to say goodbye to shelby today. shelters wouldn’t be filled to capacity, and the local public shelter wouldn’t have had 80 animals on their euthanasia list this week.
